Shockwave is a great, proven treatment option for persistent tendon, muscle and joint problems. Shockwave therapy is applied to the skin using a hand-held device. It is non-invasive and works by delivering high energy sound waves, targeted to specific damaged tissues encouraging pain relief, accelerated healing and stimulates cell regeneration. We use Radial Shockwave therapy in our Clevedon practice and have partnered with Storz Medical, a high-quality Swiss manufacturer trusted by the NHS and many elite sports clubs. We often include aspects of osteopathic treatment alongside shockwave within a consultation to maximise your recovery.

  • Highly effective treatment for patients with chronic tendon disorders.
  • A non-surgical treatment that works by delivering impulses of energy, targeted to specific damaged tissues within the abnormal tendon.
  • Increases blood flow within the affected area, stimulating cell regeneration & healing while decreasing local factors that cause pain.
  • Evidence shows results vary between 60-90% response rates depending on the condition being treated.
  • FAST treatment times. NO anaesthesia.

FAQs

What can Shockwave treat?
Shockwave Therapy can be used to treat a number of musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those that are chronic or persistent, which haven’t responded to other treatments such as medication, rest, injection therapy, orthotics and physiotherapy. Conditions treated include:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Rotator cuff problems
  • Trochanteric bursitis
  • Patella tendinopathy (aka runner’s knee)
  • Tennis & golfer’s elbow
  • Calcific tendonitis

How do I book an appointment?

You would need to book a “First appointment” session with one of our Osteopaths.  We are all trained to use Shockwave and would use the hour-long appointment to assess the problem, start with treatment and look at things you can do such as stretches and exercises.  You can book online or please call the practice.  We are more than happy to speak to you on the phone before you book in to discuss if this right for you.

Is it effective?

There are many good research studies supporting the effectiveness of shockwave.  Success rate ranges between 60-90%, depending on the condition being treated. When combined with rehabilitation, Shockwave Therapy is clinically proven to be successful in most patients with the conditions listed above after 3 months. It is used by top orthopaedic hospitals and in elite sport and is covered by many health insurance companies including AXA.

Is it painful?

You may experience some discomfort during treatment, but the pain should be tolerable. The intensity of the shockwaves can be adjusted accordingly. Due to the analgesic effect of Shockwave Therapy many patients report immediate pain relief following treatment.

How many sessions are needed?

The amount of treatment sessions will vary dependent on the condition being treated and the length of time you have had it for. As a rule, 3-6 sessions are advised. Sessions last about 20-30 minutes.  We often will include some aspect of hands-on Osteopathic treatment, rehab advice & exercises within the same session.  Initial pain relief is followed by an enhanced healing response that continues after your final treatment session.

Is Shockwave Therapy Safe?

Yes, it has NICE Guidance for a large number of indications and is used within the NHS. Shockwave Therapy performed by appropriately trained practitioners is largely risk free. Common side-effects include short-term soreness, redness and bruising.
